Seventeen: The Thirteen Member K-Pop Group

Seventeen is a thirteen member South Korean boy group. They debuted on May 26, 2015 under Pledis Entertainment, which is now a part of HYBE Entertainment. The meaning behind the group name Seventeen is, thirteen members plus three subunit teams plus one team as a whole.

Seventeen has accomplished a lot in the time they have been together! In 2023 they won their very first Grand Prize, also known as a Daesang award, at the 2023 Asia Artists Awards. They won album of the year for the album FML. This is essentially the highest honor or largest award to be won on the award shows.

Seventeen’s fandom name is CARAT, which was voted on by the fans of the group. This name came from their debut album entitled 17 CARAT. The word CARAT also relates to the groups relationship between them and diamonds based off the album and how with them and their fans make the group shine bright and strong.

The group’s subunits include performance, vocal, and hip hop. The members in the performance team are Hoshi (the performance team leader), Jun, The8 and Dino, the maknae (meaning the youngest member of the group).

Below is a music video that the performance team released called Spell, which was released in 2024 on the 17 Right Here album.

The song highlights not only their dance and performance ability but also their vocals as well. Spell is a love song that talks about their love for another person. Lyrics of the song include, “you’re my heart… I’m your heart… I’ll say again lovin’ you… I wanna keep knowing you more… Adila kiya akiya shurapoeh…. With a language only we know, I cast a spell.”

The members in the vocal team are Woozi (the vocal team leader), Seungkwan, DK, Jeonghan and Joshua. Woozi is also Seventeen’s song writer and producer.

Below is a music video consisting of the vocal team members called Cheers to Youth, which highlights the groups amazing vocals! Lyrics of the song include, “That even in this suffocating world, I still found little things that made me smile… Even in this suffocating world everything will be fine because I will love myself as I am”

To me this a song about self love. It is telling the listener that even if it seems like the world is against you or you might be going through something difficult you have to think about the positive things that have happened, even if it is something small.

You should not only focus on the negativity that may be around you. You should look for happiness not only in big things happening in your life but also in the small things as well. It is a song that is encouraging everyone to love themselves.

The members in the hip hop team are S.Coups (the hip hop team leader), Vernon, Wonwoo, and Mingyu. S.Coups is also Seventeen’s leader, meaning he is in charge of and responsible for taking care the members, essentially leads the members and takes charge when needed.

Below is a music video of the song LALALI off of the 17 Right Here album, which highlights the subunits rap ability but is also a very fun and playful song and entertaining video to watch.

A few lyrics from the song include, “SVT can’t stop it… I leave footprints on the globe… I’ve been through it all… no one can stop us… our energy is another level… no one can stop us on stage.”

This song to me is talking about the success they have achieved. Not only that but also how far they have come and how they have been fighting from the start and will continue to do so.

A song that highlights their abilities as individuals and as a group, is called Super, which came out in the year 2023 on the FML album. This is an incredibly strong performance song. It shows and talks about their chemistry as a group, their hard work together and their success since debut.

The song Super also talks about their love for their group and how they won’t stop fighting and performing together.

Lyrics include, “I love my team, I love my crew, we already made it this far.” It also talks about how they will not stop until they reach their goals. Saying “We’ll never rest, every day, make it, make it… Don’t break till we make it.”

The song God of Music came out in 2023 on the FML album. This song is incredibly bright, happy and uplifting. The music video is very happy, colorful and eye-catching. The song talks about the amazing impact music has to bring people together from around the world even if they don’t speak the same language.

A few lyrics that stand out to me are, “A universal language… different alphabets, but no matter as long as there’s music… we can’t communicate with words, but with music… we can be best friends from now on.”

I loved these lyrics because in my opinion you don’t have to speak the language to love the music. I do not speak Korean fluently but to me that doesn’t matter, I still feel a connection to the music, song and group.

Other lyrics that really stand out to me are, “What is our happiness… let’s just dance and sing… this is our happiness… music is our breath” This to me is again saying how much they love music and how important it is in each of their lives.

These are only a few songs that I love and would highly recommend listening to, as well as all of their other music of course!

Seventeen is a group that I love to watch and listen to. They are so positive! When I am having a bad day, I watch their content and it will bring me so much joy, make me smile, and even forget about what I might be dealing with at the time.
