Big Ocean: The First Hard of Hearing K-Pop Group

Big Ocean debuted on April 20, 2024 which was Korea’s Day of People with Disabilities. They are the first ever hard of hearing k-pop group!

The members of the group are Park Hyunjin, Lee Chanyeon, and Kim Jiseok.

The member Hyunjin (PJ) has said that the meaning behind their groups name is, “When you see a big ocean, you feel peaceful and comfortable… We want to spread hope and positive energy to everyone like a big ocean.”

The day of their debut, they even got a shout out from the National Health Organization.

Big Ocean’s company is Parastar Entertainment, whose goal is to highlight, support and represent artists and athletes with disabilities.

The members all have slightly different levels of hearing.

They use different tools to help them keep time and synchronize with each other while performing. Such as smart watches, flashing lights, and metronome sounds to help them when learning choreographies or singing.

They practice extremely hard to make sure their performances are perfect and in synch.

They have also mentioned that they use the vibrations from their steps in order to get the tempo and they count out loud to help them stay in synch as well.

And their songs incorporate English, Korean and sign language in them.

Sign language is also incorporated in their choreography! They use a mixture of Korean Sign Language, American Sign Language and International Sign Language.

I would love to recommend some Big Ocean songs for people that might not know them or want to learn a bit more about them!

The song Glow is such a bright song. It really just makes the listener feel happy and want to get up, dance and have a good time!

Below is a making film and the entire song with English subtitles! In this video we are also able to see them practicing, learning choreography, singing and using the tools they use to help them as well!

This song has such a beautiful message about being kind to everyone, acceptance and spreading positivity. I really love this song and think it incredible!

A few lyrics from the song include, “Hold each other’s hands everyone and look up to the sky… Imagine the world we’ll build together in the sky… Isn’t it dazzling, its so beautiful… With our hands holding, let’s start building together.”

The song FLOW is also such a fun and bright song! It was released on November 11, 2024.

This is such a special song and video because they filmed it on the campus of the National Institute for Deaf Youth in Paris.

The music video is beautifully shot and at the beginning each member uses sign language during their individual parts.

I also think that this video and song do a great job showing each member individually and them together as a group.

The music video shows many different people coming together to perform and to simply have a good time!

It is so positive and just makes you smile when watching it!

I also really wanted to include the dance practice video for the song FLOW below in order to show the full choreography, which I think goes beautifully with the song!

Another song that I would like to recommend is called BLOW. This was released on July 11, 2024.

This song again has such a positive beat and instrumental. The choreography is also very fun as well!

A few lyrics from the song include, “The sun goes down… The stress runs out… We hit the floor… Our hearts go up in flames… I take my steps again… Jump into the spotlight… Behind countless gazes… Every moment is a highlight… I feel the sound of music ringing… With my heart… You ready? Come on.”

I think this song, simply put is a love song. They are talking about the person they like and also saying that they love being on the dance floor and having fun together.

The song SLOW was released on Aug 10, 2024 and they had a featuring artist too, Young K from the band DAY6!

This music video is so fun because they are signing the entire song. This is such a beautiful and inspirational song!

I personally think they are talking to their fans with this song and saying that they will never give up and will keep fighting.

A few lyrics include, “Until I’m out of breath.. I’ll keep going without stopping… I believe… We’ll slowly but surely… Soar higher… we’ll never give up.”

ATTENTION is their latest comeback! It just recently came out on Apr 20, 2025.

I really love this song and think it is so addictive. I love the whistle part in the song as well!

I would say that this song is a bit more laid back and a bit of a different genre for them. But it definitely still has the Big Ocean feel!

This music video feels even more elevated than their previous ones and is again beautifully shot!

I think my two favorite songs by Big Ocean are FLOW and ATTENTION. They are both different vibes and styles but are so catchy and fun to listen to!

I am so happy and proud of Big Ocean! They deserve all the success in the world! I can not wait to see what the future holds for them and I wish nothing but the best for them!
